Chris Bumstead discussed how a face-off with Arnold Schwarzenegger might unfold.
Chris Bumstead not only reigns supreme in Classic Physique, but he has also become a leading icon in bodybuilding. Naturally, fans fantasize about matchups against some of the sport’s legends. Foremost among these is Arnold Schwarzenegger. In a recent conversation, Bumstead provided his thoughts on how this hypothetical clash might play out.
Bumstead holds the title of four-time Classic Physique Olympia champion. During the 2022 competition, he faced a formidable challenge from Ramon Dino, yet ultimately secured a decisive victory. As the year progresses, his aim is to capture his fifth consecutive title. Dominant on stage, Bumstead has also leveraged his success to build a flourishing personal brand.
Likewise, Schwarzenegger left a colossal impact on bodybuilding during his career. Credited as one of the greatest of all time, he later ventured into acting and politics, broadening his influence.
Chris Bumstead: “Times Evolve…In Last Year’s Olympia, I Think I’d Outdo Him”
Clearly, we can never truly compare Chris Bumstead and Arnold Schwarzenegger at their career zeniths. While guesting on the Full Send Podcast, Bumstead was asked who would come out on top in such a matchup.
“It’s tough to determine because athletes back then weren’t as shredded. If I went back, I’d be the leanest person they’d witnessed, and they’d be bewildered. I’m not sure they’d even favor that.
Maybe he’d win because of that, but if he were to compete against me in last year’s Olympia, I think I’d surpass him because he wouldn’t be conditioned enough, you know, he wasn’t.”

Such debates occur across all sports, irrespective of the discipline. The crux is that sports evolve, and many dynamics come into play when debating these dream confrontations.
“Sports progress over time. For instance, in the past, ’90s NBA players would drink beer at halftime. Nowadays, they have IVs and various treatments just to perform at their peak. Things change.”
Chris Bumstead admitted he has rarely conversed with Arnold Schwarzenegger but feels honored to be mentioned alongside him.
“I’ve spoken to him once, briefly. He’s a busy guy. I don’t often see or talk to him.
It’s definitely an honor. He’s the ultimate GOAT. I doubt I’ll ever replace him as the GOAT in bodybuilding, despite what some say. The impact he had on the sport is unmatched.”
Bumstead concluded the discussion by acknowledging Schwarzenegger’s monumental contributions to bodybuilding. From his stage performances, beyond the trophy hunts to his efforts in promoting the sport, Schwarzenegger undeniably helped shape bodybuilding into what it is today.
