Kurt Angle shared insights about his Olympic gold medal achievement and the challenges he overcame with a fractured neck.
Kurt Angle is one of the most iconic figures in WWE history. Before dominating the professional wrestling scene, he had an illustrious college career. Angle’s crowning glory came with his 1996 gold medal triumph at the Olympics, achieved despite a fractured neck. He recently elaborated on this feat with Joe Rogan.
Angle is one of only four individuals to win what is known as the amateur grand slam in wrestling. This includes victories at the Junior Nationals, NCAA, World Championships, and the Olympics. In 2016, Angle was inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame and was recognized as the top shoot wrestler by USA Wrestlers.
Kurt Angle was also inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017. Throughout his career, Angle gained fame for his remarkable athletic abilities, wrestling techniques, and charismatic presence on the microphone. He is a four-time WWE Champion and a former World Heavyweight Champion.
Kurt Angle Reflects on Gold Medal Triumph
Kurt Angle’s career is adorned with numerous accolades and achievements. In 1996, he demonstrated one of the most extraordinary displays of resilience and determination on the mat.
“I got thrown on my head during the first round of the Olympic trials, which broke my neck without my knowledge. Despite the unbearable pain and numbness, I wrestled through the semis and won. I advanced to the finals and claimed victory there as well.”

Angle further explained how he discovered his broken neck after returning home.
“I secured the win in the first round of Olympic trials while suffering from a fractured neck. Upon visiting the doctor the next day, an MRI revealed four broken vertebrae and two disks pressing into my spinal cord. The doctor advised me to quit wrestling. I was heartbroken.”
After receiving this news, Angle sought another medical opinion. This doctor aimed to prepare Angle for the next round of trials, roughly six weeks ahead.
“Though not entirely healed, you will be well enough to compete. A doctor will accompany you to administer 12 shots of novocaine to your neck five minutes before each match.
It was my only chance. There was no guarantee I would make the Olympic team in 2000 or 2004. This was my one shot.”
