American Gladiators’ Star William ‘Billy’ Smith Passes Away at 56

Prior to his role on ‘American Gladiators,’ Billy Smith engaged in bodybuilding.

William ‘Billy’ Smith, famously known as Thunder, has died at the age of 56. Smith gained fame for his role on ‘American Gladiators’ but was also an avid bodybuilder from a young age. His passing was announced by the American Gladiators’ Instagram account, with the cause of death currently unknown.

“With heavy hearts, we announce the departure of American Gladiators legend and bodybuilding icon William ‘Billy’ Smith aka Thunder. Our deepest sympathies go out to his loved ones #RIP.”

Billy Smith embarked on his bodybuilding career at the age of 17. Spanning 15 years, Smith secured 24 victories and quickly became a formidable competitor. Among his noteworthy achievements are a win at the 1984 Gold’s Classic, a sixth-place finish in the 1984 Nationals Heavyweight Division, and a third-place position at Nationals.

Smith had a keen interest in sports and conditioning. Early on, he discovered his passion for bodybuilding, which opened many doors due to his impressive physique. Beyond his stage success, Smith starred on American Gladiators from 1990 to 1992, where he earned widespread admiration. He returned to bodybuilding in 1995, placing fifth in the heavyweight category at the USA’s.

Billy Smith touched numerous lives through his bodybuilding career and television persona. Dave Palumbo, owner of RxMuscle, posted a tribute following the news.

“It’s truly disheartening to learn about the passing of American Gladiators star and top NPC bodybuilder Billy Thunder Smith. I competed alongside him in the 90s… such a great guy @official_rxmuscleofficial_rxmuscle.”
